MODULE 2: Increasing Dream Recall

Today’s lesson is an introduction to dream recall and an overview of techniques you can use to better remember your dreams on a regular basis.

Dream Recall Techniques

Today, we’re going to tackle the common issue of how to remember more of your dreams and I’m going to give you some very simple and practical tips to implement on a daily basis to help you increase your dream recall and after the lesson, you’ll be able to download a copy of all of the techniques we discuss.

As we learned last week – every single person dreams, it’s merely a matter of whether or not you remember them. So it’s not that you need to induce dreaming – it’s that you need to remember what you dream about.

Last week we learned that the deeper of a sleeper you are, the less likely you are to remember what you dreamed about. So today, we’re going to talk about a few ways to remedy that situation. Let’s get right into it!


#1 Keep A Dream Journal

Keep your dream journal on your nightstand or close to your bed so you can write down your dreams immediately after you have them.

Dreams are stored in your short-term memory and movement, activity, and thoughts about something else can make you forget them
so you want to get them down on paper as soon as possible.

For your every day dream journal, I recommend using a blogging platform like WordPress or blogger as it makes it easy to sort your dreams over time.

I’ve included links to some free online dream journal options in the section below the lesson, just in case you haven’t gotten around to it yet (but you need to!).

It can be helpful, however, to have something handy on your nightstand to write things down quickly as you wake up in the middle of the night.

When you create a routine around remembering your dreams – whether it’s writing them down first thing before you get out of bed,
or writing them in your online journal while you’re drinking your morning coffee (like me!), you’ll be able to remember more of them.


#2 Intention mantra

Rule number one when it comes to remembering your dreams – INTENTION IS EVERYTHING!

For some of you, simply holding the intention to remember your dreams is all that it will take.

Before you go to sleep every night, say to yourself (and mean it!:

“I will remember my dreams.”

You can repeat it to yourself over and over as you fall asleep, or just say it three times. You can say it out loud, or in your head. It may even be helpful to make it physically tangible by writing it down on a post it note and leaving it on your nightstand.



#3 Repetition

Technique number two is also pretty straightforward: When you wake up from a dream in the morning or in the middle of the night, repeat the dream in your head over and over as you fall back to sleep or before you wake up. This will help you commit the dream to memory.

This is a technique that I employ regularly, myself. I’m far too lazy to get up in the middle of the night and write my dreams down unless it’s something super intense and chalk full of symbols that I know I don’t want to forget the next day.

If you do this often enough, eventually it will become a habit.

I find that I now repeat dream symbols to myself while I’m still in the dream!



#5 Early Alarm

As I mentioned in the beginning of the lesson, how deeply you sleep can determine how often you remember your dreams.

An easy way to counteract this is to simply set your alarm about 20 minutes early, so that you’re more likely to wake up during REM sleep. And then, of course, repeat your dream in your head and write it down immediately!



#6 Don’t Move

Dreams are stored in your short-term memory and movement, activity, and thoughts about something else can quickly erase your dreams from your mind. So when you wake up in the morning, don’t move. Don’t even open your eyes. Just lay there and hold onto whatever it was that you were dreaming about for a few minutes until you’ve committed it to memory. Then write it down!

If you don’t remember any dreams when you wake up, here’s another way to start:

  • Write down what you are thinking about
  • Write down how you are feeling
  • Write down any images in your head

More often than not, dreams linger. That means that whatever you are thinking and feeling as you wake up is likely to be because you were dreaming about it.

So start there – simply write down whatever you are thinking/feeling/seeing in your mind as you wake up. It can be as simple as “red” or “happy.” no matter how simple, just write it down.

After a while – maybe even later in the day, you will start to remember dream fragments. It could be a vague feeling of a location, image, or action from the dream. With practice, soon you will notice you can recall entire dream scenes and eventually you’ll recall full narratives.



Now that you’ve learned all of these different ways to amp up your dream recall, it’s time to start practicing them! Between now and our next lesson (which is 7 days from now), I want you to implement AT LEAST one of these techniques, but of course, using all of them will be even more helpful.

I also want you to start your dream journal if you haven’t already – you’re going to need it for all of your upcoming exercises.
